The New Minnesotans Toolkit has its roots in Changing Faces, Changing Communities, a project created by the League of Women Voters Minnesota Education Fund (LWVMNEF), which led to a statewide forum on immigration issues and the creation of 70 community circles thrughout Minnesota. A follow-up LWVMNEF study, Immigration in Minnesota, Challenges and Opportunities, led to further community outreach activities and the initiation of The New Americans Minnesota Community Campaign. In partnership with Twin Cities Public Television and Neighborhood House, LWVMNEF produced the "The New Minnesotans", a 60-minute program in town hall forum format, which originally aired on April 4th, 2004. The New Minnesotans video is a 25-minute edited version of that program. The New Minnesotans, a compelling 25-minute video, features a town hall discussion with educators, social service providers, and community activists interspersed with stories of New Americans and their experiences settling in Minnesota. Much of the discussion focuses on the issues of education and jobs. The New Minnesotans video is the centerpiece of the toolkit, which includes a user-friendly discussion and activity guide, valuable resources and other ideas for further action to help promote community dialogue throughout the state. |
